Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Therapy?
July 12, 2024
Have you noticed how wanting to heal is cool now?
The last 5 years have been a whirlwind ride around therapy.
For decades, therapists were taught to be blank slates, treat mental health like we do a broken knee, and limit their self expression + personal journeys.
Insert social media and TikTok therapists… and you have a whole new world that no one exactly knows what to do with it.
Therapy is normal now.
Therapy is encouraged now.
You won’t be shamed for speaking publicly about your last therapy appointment.
Which we love! And it leads us to ask the question: Is there such a thing as too much therapy?
Here at Forward Healing, we believe, well duh, there is always such a thing as too much of something.
Why would therapy be different?
That’s why we created our Forward Model of Change®: to give you options for when you’ve done therapy for longer than is beneficial.
Maybe you’ve been in therapy for years and are wondering what the next step is.
Maybe you’ve already tackled and worked on all the things you initially went to therapy for, and are wondering what to work on next, but you don’t want to stop seeing a mental health professional because having support is comforting. (That’s totally normal by the way, we all have our comfort zones, and good for you for seeking out support!)
Do any of these sound familiar?
- You regularly notice yourself trying to solve your problems by asking what was the trigger for this action, rather than simply holding space for life.
- Therapy sessions feel like groundhog day: Here we go again but then what? Where is this actually leading?
- You are overly focused on how you got here rather than where you see yourself next. You put your past on a mental pedestal, rather than your future.
- The lightbulb ah-ha moments are growing few and far in between…and you’re wondering why.
- You feel stalled in some aspect of your life. Like you’ve solved the things you’re working on, but don’t know where to go next.
If any of those sound familiar, you may be ready for a new format of support.
Therapy is wonderful and useful, and there comes a point when you’ve done all the work you can do inside therapy. We’re not throwing therapy out of the window (we’re a team of licensed therapists, after all).
